What is a wedge heel?
Wedge heels have a triangular heel that runs from the front of the foot to the back, rather than sitting just under the heel.
History
The wedge heel was invented by Salvatore Ferragamo, an Italian designer, in 1936. The style became popular in North America in the early 1940s.
Benefits
Wedge heels are sturdier and more comfortable than the typical high heel. They create an illusion of longer legs and thinner ankles, and better support the arch of the foot.
When to Wear
Wedges go well with flowing skirts or dresses of any length, and with wide-legged pants. They can look chunky or clumsy with clothing that fits close to the body, however, such as pencil skirts or skinny jeans.
Considerations
Wedge heels are a casual style of shoe. Formal occasions will likely call for more elegant footwear.
